Mother's Day 2012

The "Heart of a Mom"

When Family Talk asked for a "tribute to mom," sons and daughters from all across the country stepped up to say just how much they loved and appreciated mom.

We've selected excerpts from five of those stories to use for our "Heart of a Mom" celebration for Mother's Day Week.

Happy Mother's Day!

Monday, May 7: A Listening Heart

Luke 10:39: Mary sat at the Lord's feet listening to what He said. But her sister Martha was distracted by all the preparations. Jesus said: You are worried about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better.

"I was 90 miles away in a hospital after almost slipping into labor, months too early for the birth of my first child. Mom called to check on me and asked me if I needed her to come. I said, 'No, everything will be fine. I hung up wishing I'd told her the truth—I needed her to come! Two hours later she walked through the door. She'd listened to my heart instead of my words!" -Lauren L.

Tuesday, May 8: A Thankful Heart

Colossians 3:16: Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.

"I'm a pastor's wife, and have been with many who are ill, but I have never met anyone like my precious mother. She never complains. She has had many dark nights of body and soul, but she ALWAYS looks for what I call, that 'pinhole of light!' What a sweet inspiration of trust and faith in God she has been. What a gift she is to so many people—but most of all to ME!" -Russ and Karen L.

Wednesday, May 9: A Servant Heart

2 Corinthians 8:7: Just as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.

"When my mother was 79 (she's now 85), I called to ask her what she was up to. She replied, 'Your aunt and I are making candy and cookies to take to the elderly.' I laughed because she didn't consider herself in that category! She always thought of others and has embodied the heart of serving. Indeed, I've learned there is joy in giving!" -Edward C.
