Dr. James Dobson Urges Americans to Put Aside Partisanship and Celebrate Successes

Written by Dr. James Dobson | February 05, 2020

February 5, 2020 — The following quote may be attributed to Dr. James Dobson, President of the James Dobson Family Institute, regarding President Donald Trump's State of the Union address:

"President Donald Trump's State of the Union address offered encouraging news to all Americans: 'Jobs are booming. Incomes are soaring. Poverty is plummeting. Crime is falling. Confidence is surging.'

"There were many memorable moments, too numerous to adequately recount. From calling on Congress to finally end late-term abortions to proclaiming the importance of religious liberty, there was much to celebrate in the President's address.

"There was also cause for concern. I was appalled to see Nancy Pelosi tear up a copy of the President's speech at the conclusion of his remarks. Just as President Trump is our President, Ms. Pelosi is our Speaker of the House. Her flagrant disrespect reflects on all of us. I sincerely hope all Americans will send a strong message that such behavior is neither appreciated nor tolerated.

"Our nation does not exist for the furtherance of politicians or partisanship. Rather, our public officials serve at the pleasure of—and for the advancement of—we the people. For this reason, one party should not sit on its hands when the President offers good news about the economy, healthcare, education, or freedom. At some point, our unity as Americans should trump our political disagreements.

"Midway through his remarks, the President issued this charge to Congress: 'We must never forget that the only victories that matter in Washington are victories that deliver for the American people. The people are the heart of our country, their dreams are the soul of our country, and their love is what powers and sustains our country.'

"May we all take this message to heart and translate it to action."
