Moms For Liberty

Written by Gary Bauer | September 08, 2023

The Labor Day weekend edition of the Wall Street Journal features an interview with Tina Descovich and Tiffany Justice, the co-founders of Moms for Liberty. This parental rights group was founded on January 1, 2021, to the applause of millions of Americans who were tired of the government takeover of parents’ rights and responsibilities. The timing was exactly right. Today, it has 300 county chapters in 46 states and “120,000 active on-the-ground moms.”

Ms. Descovich says the group’s mission is to “unify, educate and empower parents to defend their parental rights at all levels of government.” As Ms. Justice put it, “We do not co-parent with the government.”

In 1992, Dr. James Dobson and I co-authored Children at Risk. The book had a simple idea that was true then and even more relevant today. There is a war over values taking place. The winner of that war will have control of our children and the power to teach them what to believe about everything from the meaning of life to the history of America. Moms for Liberty intends to prevail in this battle.

But it won’t be easy. The amount of hate and vitriol aimed at this group is disturbing. Their leadership has been the target of an avalanche of “threats – by email, voicemail and even handwritten letters.”

As we have previously reported, Moms for Liberty has been smeared by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). That group has a proud history of fighting against the KKK in the 1970s. Sadly, it is now in the hands of radical leftists who routinely smear mainstream conservative and Christian organizations as “hate groups.”

In June, they labeled Moms for Liberty as “extremist” and “antigovernment,” claiming the organization’s primary goal was to fuel “right-wing hysteria.”

Moms for Liberty is exploring every legal option and may file suit against the SPLC. We hope they do. But whether or not they go to court, the leadership will not be intimidated from this battle to restore parental rights to direct our children’s education.

As Ms. Descovich told the Wall Street Journal, “Once a parent loses the right to direct the upbringing of their child, we’ve lost everything. You’ve lost your family. You’ve lost your community. You have lost the basic unit of society.”

JDFI stands with Moms for Liberty. Please join us in praying for the organization and its courageous leadership.
