6 Encouraging Verses to Overcome Fear

It seems like nearly every day you hear news about unexpected and senseless violence. Recently, in a coastal town in France, many people had gathered to watch fireworks on a summer evening. Instead, there was an explosion of another kind—a large truck rammed into the crowd and more than 80 people were killed.

Increasingly, there are reports of shootings or bombs going off—in airports, cafés, schools, even churches. And it happens on the other side of the globe or right in your own hometown.

Understandably, that kind of news can leave some people feeling fearful or anxious.

Maybe your worries are of a different sort. You’re afraid that the money will run out before the month is over. Or you’re fearful of flying in an airplane. Could it be that you’re afraid that you’ll never find real and lasting love—or you’re anxious that the relationship you have will disappear?

Know this: You may feel fearful at times, but you do not have to live in fear.

You have a choice. I have a choice: Will I live by fear or by faith?

You can stand strong in the face of adversity or uncertainty when the power of God at work inside of you. It starts with choosing to put your faith in God, not your circumstances, and by choosing prayer over panic.

Jill Briscoe once said, “Courage is fear that has said its prayers.”

You can talk to God in prayer and release your fears—not hold on to them. Give to God your fears and doubts. Trust that He will take care of things—in his way and his timing—because He is stronger and wiser and more loving that you could ever imagine.

Nothing is too hard for God.

In dark times, the Lord is your light. He will help you to see and not be afraid. In the storms of life, He is your steady anchor.

So take heart and find renewed hope in this ancient wisdom from God’s Word that is relevant today and every day. Here are some helpful Bible verses to overcome fear:

1) “I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day.” (2 Timothy 1:12)

2) The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1)

3) “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

4) “When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.” (Psalm 94:19)

5) “Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.” (Proverbs 29:25)

6) “If you’ll hold on to me for dear life,” says God, “I’ll get you out of any trouble. I’ll give you the best of care if you’ll only get to know and trust me. Call me and I’ll answer, be at your side in bad times” (Psalm 91:14-15, The Message)

Prayer

Lord, I ask that you would give me renewed strength and faith instead of fear and doubt. Protect me, and those I love. When I cannot see the way, be my light. Help me to look to You—and Your unwavering love for me—and not my circumstances. Help me to remember that you are willing and more than able to take care of whatever comes my way. I choose to trust You. Thank you for your peace. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
