Senator Tim Scott is one of South Carolina’s two US senators. He is very open about the role of his Christian faith in every aspect of his life. He was a great admirer of Dr. James Dobson.
Senator Scott delivered a tremendous speech to the Republican Party’s historic midterm convention in Dallas, Texas, last week.1
The gist of Senator Scott’s address was his concern about how many socialist and even Marxist candidates have been nominated by the Democrat Party to run in this November’s elections. He described them as “dangerous” and “radical.”2
Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., said much the same thing in his remarks. He said his father, Bobby Kennedy, and his uncle, John F. Kennedy, would not recognize today’s Democrat Party.3
Senator Scott, who is Black, speaks with great emotional energy. I have heard him speak many times. This speech was no different. He talked about faith in God and Jesus Christ, and he did so in the energetic cadence of a Southern Black pastor. The GOP delegates in Dallas loved it. But he immediately came under attack and his Christian faith was mocked.
On the MSNOW program “Morning Joe,” Joe Scarborough said Scott needed “anti-seizure medication.” Other panelists suggested he was having a mental breakdown. Then, the “Reverend” Al Sharpton urged the roundtable hosts to join hands and “pray” for Senator Scott. But the prayer was actually mocking Scott. In his “prayer,” Sharpton declared that Scott was “really out there.” Smiles and laughter from other panelists followed the fake prayer.4 An article published after the “Morning Joe” episode reports that co-host Mika Brzezinski “seemed to say” that Scott needed an “intervention.”5 Sharpton’s bizarre remarks and the mocking of Scott’s Christian faith by MSNOW hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski are not isolated incidents. They are another example of the Left engaging in a campaign to demonize and marginalize evangelical Christians.
What is “really out there” to the Left is when Bible-believing Christians say Jesus Christ is the Son of God. What is “really out there” to the Left is the notion that we are all created equal and endowed by our Creator with the unalienable right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. What is “really out there” to the Left is the belief of many evangelical Christians that God has had His hand on America throughout our history. In fact, if you love Jesus and love America, the Left will smear you as a “Christian nationalist.”
Meanwhile, the Left has a bizarre obsession with sterilizing and mutilating children. They are obsessed with killing preborn babies throughout all nine months of pregnancy. The Left is embracing socialism and other policies that will destroy our economy and undermine our freedom. All of those things are what’s “really out there.”
Sadly, this attack on Senator Scott’s faith is nothing new. We saw the Left’s anti-Christian bigotry after the horrific shooting at a Catholic church in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mayor Jacob Frey mocked the prayers of evangelical Christians in the aftermath of that atrocity. He even suggested that the prayers of the children and adults in the church were pointless because they were “literally praying”6 in the pews when a demonic transgender killer opened fire.
More recently, left-wing podcasters Jennifer Welch and Angie Sullivan viciously attacked evangelical Christians who choose to homeschool their children. They called homeschooling a really “weird” choice that leads to “trickle-down stupidity.” Sullivan added that she doesn’t “trust somebody that wants to be with their kids 24/7.”7
Welch and Sullivan frequently belittle and berate evangelical Christians. Sullivan, who was once a Bible study teacher, is part of a regular phenomenon of the Left trotting out former evangelicals who have fallen away from the faith to attack their former Christian brothers and sisters.
When evangelicals and other conservative Christians get involved in normal political activity that every American should be involved in, we’re called the “American Taliban.” Christians who believe in the sanctity of life are accused of “hating women” and “trying to control women’s bodies.” Christians who believe children should be protected from sterilizing and mutilating transgender procedures are accused of “waging a genocide” against transgender individuals.
Ironically, at the same time that the Left is throwing around these smears and accusations, it is attempting to steal the gospel of Jesus Christ and twist the Bible into a manifesto for big government socialism, open borders, abortion, and transgender ideology.
The Southern Poverty Law Center, which claims to fight bigotry and hatred, exists solely to spread bigotry and hatred against conservative Christians. For years, the SPLC has labeled mainstream Christian and conservative organizations as “hate groups.”
The SPLC frequently smeared Dr. James Dobson as a “bigot.” It labeled the Family Research Council—an organization Dr. Dobson founded and I led for ten years—as a “hate group.” Using the SPLC’s materials, an unhinged leftist entered FRC’s lobby and opened fire, wounding a brave security guard.
After Roe v. Wade was overturned, hundreds of churches and pro-life pregnancy resource centers were vandalized and even firebombed. A radicalized transgender individual traveled from California to the Washington, DC, suburbs with the intention of killing Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. The accused assassin of Charlie Kirk was a leftist who hated Kirk for unapologetically sharing his Christian faith on college campuses. He referred to Kirk as a “fascist.”
The godless Marxist Left wants evangelical Christians to feel isolated and marginalized. It wants to demoralize us and drive us from the public square. It is determined to rip America out of the rich soil of our Judeo-Christian foundation. We must not let them succeed.
In this critical decision year, it is essential that every Christian citizen exercises their right to vote this November for candidates who will defend our God-given rights, especially our religious liberty. As Ronald Reagan famously warned, “If we ever forget that we’re one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under.”8
