Beginning April 18, 2026, an extraordinary event will happen in the nation’s capital. Nearly 500 Christian leaders from all walks of life will read the entire Bible out loud for twelve hours a day over the course of seven days.
This event, America Reads the Bible, is appropriately taking place at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C. The very existence of the museum in the nation’s capital, a city built on a quest for temporal power, is in itself a miracle. It is evidence of God’s continued hand on America.
Bunni Pounds, founder and president of Christians Engaged, is the driving force behind this much-needed public reading of the Bible. I had the privilege of interviewing her for Family Talk. If you missed our discussion on Monday, you can listen to it here.
Much of the Washington power structure is at war with the truth of the Gospel. We are grateful that the Trump administration promotes our Judeo/Christian heritage every day. On Easter, Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins came under fire. Her “transgression” made the front page of Friday’s Washington Post. What did Secretary Rollins do that Washington’s radical secularists found so alarming? She dared to send an email to Department of Agriculture employees that began, “Happy Easter—He is Risen indeed!”1 She went on to explain to those interested the basic truth of the Christian faith.
The secular Left went ballistic. They claimed that sharing with employees that Christ defeated death was an unconstitutional violation of the separation of church and state. The “critics” would benefit from reading the Constitution.
As I hope you know, the phrase “separation of church and state” is nowhere to be found in our Constitution. Secondly, the notion that someone serving in government cannot say anything about Christianity is a complete repudiation of the freedom of religion that America is built on. None of the Founding Fathers would have been able to serve in government had they been censored in that way. But the Washington Post’s hyperventilating article is a comment on where we are now as a nation. America Reads the Bible could not be taking place at a better time.
Sadly, all the dysfunction and decay in our society and in our government are currently on full display. A torrid sex scandal has already forced Democrat Congressman Eric Swalwell out of the California governor’s race as well as forcing him to give up his congressional seat. Other members of Congress are also ensnared in corruption scandals as well.
The refusal of Democrat leaders to fund the Department of Homeland Security during the war with Iran—the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism—is a national scandal. It is also clearly immoral. Yet, as I write this, we are in the middle of the longest shutdown of a government agency in our history. Thankfully, President Trump found a way to pay many Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees to get airports operating normally again. But FEMA employees and Coast Guard personnel are not being paid. Their families are suffering as a result. At the same time, America’s enemies abroad are threatening terrorism against our country. Anti-Semitism is permeating our culture.
But here is the Good News: The Bible has answers to all of these problems!
If everybody in America actually believed that the Bible was the Inspired Word of God, virtually everything we are worried about—the breakdown of the family, the breakdown of reliable standards of right and wrong, political violence, transgender ideology, abortion-on-demand, corruption in every aspect of government—all of these would be solved if people actually read the Bible and believed what it said.
Nearly everyone in America in the 1700s, leading up to the American Revolution, had read the Bible, and all the Founding Fathers had read it and believed its teachings. This is not the case today.
Until Christ returns and every knee bends and every head bows, there will never be unanimity about the Truth of the Gospel.
Since men are not angels, it is imperative that Christians who believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God be in the public square. The corruption our country is dealing with can only be solved by moral people being elected to govern us. The abortion carnage can only be stopped if moral people rise up to embrace the sanctity of life and the belief that we are all made in the image of God and endowed by our Creator with the unalienable right to life. Our children will be protected from transgender ideology and post-modern delusions about gender only if moral people stand for biological and biblical truth.
I am not optimistic that the Washington, D.C., press corps will cover the America Reads the Bible event with even an ounce of respect and fair reporting. I hope I am wrong, but the media regularly elevates all kinds of bizarre and disgusting demonstrations in metropolitan Washington, D.C. But when it comes to events like this one or a right to life march, you often need a magnifying glass to know that it even happened. Or, when you read a media report about an event you attended, it’s often described as something entirely different from what you saw with your own eyes. It is likely that, if they cover it at all, “mainstream media” will say, “500 Christian nationalists are trying to force the Bible on the American people.”
Of course, we know that the Bible, inspired and “dictated” by God, will be around a long time after America is gone. It will be here until history ends and Christ returns. In the meantime, thank God for Bunni Pounds.
Pray for people who are participating in America Reads the Bible. And pray that members of Congress, government employees and business leaders will hear the words and be transformed. America needs the Bible!
