Not a heatwave, violent thunderstorms, or the naysaying of the socialist Left could prevent the American people from celebrating the glorious 250th birthday of America. Millions of us gathered in our great cities and small towns to thank God and our heroes for the blessing of living in America. The largest armada of tall ships from more than forty countries sailed past the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor.
President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and other high-ranking officials seemed to be everywhere in the week leading up to the grand event in our nation’s capital. History may record that one of the most important Fourth of July speeches was actually delivered on the eve of the Fourth by President Trump at Mount Rushmore.
The President traveled to the famous South Dakota landmark where four of our greatest Presidents are sculpted into the mountain: George Washington, who in his First Inaugural Address said America only prevailed because of God’s grace and protection; Thomas Jefferson, who authored the Declaration of Independence, which states that our liberty comes from God; Abraham Lincoln, whose Second Inaugural Address quotes or refers to the Bible a dozen times; and Theodore Roosevelt, who rejected the idea of hyphenated Americanism.
These men were truly giants of history. President Trump’s speech rose to both the occasion and the setting. His remarks were a summary of our history and an ode to the American spirit. He told the patriotic crowd:
At 250 years, America is the oldest republic on earth. We are the freest people on earth. We have the most righteous and enduring constitution on earth. We are the strongest and most powerful country on earth. And by the grace of God, the United States of America is the most successful, most accomplished, most exceptional nation ever to exist in human history.1
President Trump praised the Declaration of Independence, but he reminded the country that we have “not endured for 250 years merely because of words on paper. Liberty has prevailed because of the culture and character of the people who declared it, defended it, and preserved it.”2
During Independence Week, the President repeatedly reminded the country of our reliance on God. At Mount Rushmore, he said, “Americans did not bow before a king or a government, but kneeled only before Almighty God.”3
President Trump then issued a much-needed warning about the rising threat in our country—communism. He said:
Communism is a mortal threat to American liberty. It is the greatest threat to our country . . . because communism is the enemy of free people everywhere. . . . It’s the enemy of July 4th, 1776. . . .
Communism is the exact opposite of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It’s death, tyranny, and the pursuit of evil. The godless communist morality states that anything is justified to bring about inhuman visions . . . and to really propose what’s good. They don’t want good.
They don’t love God and they don’t want God. They don’t love religion and they don’t want religion, and they won’t have it, but we will not let them win. They have no chance against us. They have no respect for law, justice, principle, tradition, or your God-given rights. It’s an ideology of mass theft, mass control, mass lies, and mass murder.
Such doctrines can be given no quarter in a democracy because the first thing they do when they get into power is turn around and destroy it. It always is destroyed, just as communists have done in other countries all over the world, no matter where you look. Very simply, communism represents the worst ideas and abuses in history by the worst people.
The American founding represents the best ideas and traditions in history by the best people, like you. You can be loyal to Karl Marx or you can be loyal to America. You can be a communist or you can be a patriot. You cannot be both.4
Not surprisingly, the American media was not happy. The media characterized Trump’s speech as veering into attacking communism. They accused him of abandoning nonpartisanship. So, warning Americans about the godless philosophy responsible for 100 million deaths around the world that is now raising its ugly head here is seen by our leftist media as “partisanship”? How many Marxists are in our media?
The President issued this warning on the eve of July 4 for an obvious reason. All over the country, radical Islamists—who blame America for 9/11—as well as communists and socialists are winning primaries in heavily Democrat districts. They are campaigning on open borders, abolishing the police, closing prisons, expanding big government, and promoting antisemitism, anti-Americanism, transgender insanity, abortion-on-demand, and disdain for the God of the Bible.
Their unofficial leader, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, delivered his own Fourth of July message earlier on July 3. He attacked American exceptionalism. He attacked the country as racist. He attacked wealth and success. He attacked America while he was surrounded by newly naturalized citizens.
The thrust of Mamdani’s speech was how badly immigrants have been treated in America. He became a citizen only ten years ago, and now he’s mayor of America’s biggest city. His ingratitude knows no bounds. And Mamdani gave this speech while sitting at a desk George Washington used when New York City served as the nation’s capital.
In his First Inaugural Address, George Washington dedicated the nation to God. That address was delivered about five blocks from where radical Islamic terrorists flew planes into the iconic World Trade Center towers. Mamdani’s wife, Rama Duwaji, was notably absent during the 250th celebrations. She left the country for an “Islamic spiritual wellness retreat”5 on a Spanish island.
In contrast to Mamdani’s carping, President Trump celebrated America and warned us about the greatest threat facing our country. We will either continue to be the shining city upon a hill that our Founding Fathers intended, or we will follow Mamdani and his radical Islamist/Marxist allies into the trash heap of history.
We celebrated our liberty over the last week. Now we must gird ourselves for the long battle ahead for faith, family, and freedom.
