Our Children Are Still at Risk

Way back in 1990, Dr. James Dobson and I wrote a book called, Children At Risk: Winning the Battle for the Hearts and Minds of Your Children. Generally speaking, people on the cultural and political left hated the book. Most Christians loved it. But even in the church there were critics who accused Dr. Dobson and me of being “alarmist” and unduly confrontational.

They were wrong. Within a very short period of time, the book was out of date. Everything we had warned about and more had happened, and America’s children bore the brunt of all of it. The battle for their hearts, minds, and their very bodies rages still today.

Even Dr. Dobson and I could not anticipate the transgender ideology that has swept like a tsunami across our culture and educational system. Fortunately, President Trump’s Justice Department and the Department of Education are doing everything they can to protect children from the insanity, but it will take years to reverse the damage.

There is a very big difference between the two political parties on transgenderism. Schools in states with liberal governors and state legislatures are pushing trans ideology aggressively on children at earlier and earlier ages. In each election, our children are, in a very real way, “on the ballot.”

For example, in Gov. Tim Walz’s Minnesota, the Institute for Sexual and Gender Health at the University of Minnesota is launching a new project. They are creating a doll that allows children as young as four to alter genitals in order to “transform” a girl doll into a boy doll and vice versa. What possible need is there for such a toy?

Dr. Dianne Berg said the dolls were necessary to “…address the belief, ‘I’m not a ‘real’ boy because I don’t have these private parts,’ versus, ‘I am a real boy, whatever my anatomy looks like.’” What happened to those who just six years ago were screaming, “Follow the science!”

Our country, for decades, has supported a “right” to kill a child in the womb. Over 800,000 children are destroyed this way every year. If a child survives to be born, the political left supports removing healthy organs and body parts as part of so-called “gender-affirming care.” Giving children powerful chemicals and hormones is not “gender affirming.” It is child abuse and a violation of medical ethics. It is morally repugnant.

Millions will never consider or encourage abortion, nor will they conclude their daughter or granddaughter is a boy in a girl’s body. So, millions might think, why do these issues matter? With everything else going on, why should I care?

Any society that elevates abortion and transgenderism as fundamental rights is so lost it will be wrong about virtually everything else that matters. These philosophies are at war with God. The Bible states that He formed us in the womb and that we are wonderfully and beautifully made (Psalm 139).

If America, which began by stating in our Declaration of Independence that liberty comes from God, continues down this path, we will collapse from moral rot. To believe that we can force an entire society to deny reality is the stuff of totalitarian fantasies.

How we vote this November will determine, in a major way, how both the abortion issue and the transgender controversy are decided in the years ahead.

Elections have consequences. I pray that God will give us wisdom to discern which candidates will defend faith, family, freedom and the sanctity of life. Then show up on election day and vote to preserve America as “One Nation Under God.” What a great way to honor the memory of Dr. James Dobson.
