Kay Coles James
Kay Coles James serves as secretary of the Commonwealth of Virginia, a position she has held since 2022. In addition, she is the founder and chairwoman of the Gloucester Institute, which offers leadership training to African-American college students. Kay has worked at the local, state, and federal levels of government under the administrations of President George H. W. Bush and President George W. Bush, and has also served numerous organizations in the corporate and non-profit arenas. Kay is the author of three books: Never Forget, Transforming America from the Inside Out, and What I Wish I’d Known Before I Got Married. She and her husband, Charles James, Sr., have three grown children and five grandchildren.
