Literally, within a generation, the culture in America has turned upside down, and our kids are standing at ground zero. What was right just ten years ago is now seen as wrong and vice versa. How do parents in this environment raise their children to change the culture and not become victims of it?
To be honest, many of you husbands and fathers have been thinking about something else. Your wives have been busy attending seminars and reading family literature and studying the Bible, but they can't even get you to enter a discussion about what they've learned. You've been intoxicated with your work and the ego support it provides.
Have you ever heard a husband, wife, dad, mom, or grandparent say, "Because that's what families do?" This comment usually precedes an act of sacrifice, unconditional love, or an outpouring of grace to another family member.
I'm not a huge New Year's resolution guy. However, as a new year begins, it is another opportunity to raise the bar in my effort to be the best dad I can be. I'm also reminded that the opportune time to pour into my sons and daughters is limited to a couple of precious decades. This is not to say I can't still influence my older children, but those initial years while my kids are still at home are critical ones. By God's grace, if I can help influence and shape these formative years, my children will have a great launching point as they prepare to build their own lives and families apart from me.
The mission of introducing one's children to the Christian faith can be likened to a three-man relay race. First, your father runs his lap around the track, carrying the baton, which represents the gospel of Jesus Christ. At the appropriate moment, he hands the baton to you, and you begin your journey around the track. Then finally, the time will come when you must get the baton safely in the hands of your child.
How emotionally connected are you and your spouse? Is your marriage one where you feel understood, and in which arguments can be resolved? Where you trust each other with your hearts? Or instead, do you find yourselves disconnected, with resentment accumulating from unresolved conflict? Do you feel alone, even though you've been married for years?
Question: Dr. Dobson, I tend to feel depressed after every holiday, but I don't know why. These special days are very happy ones for my family.
Did you know God can use your children to teach you great lessons about the Christian life? They may not speak great truths or share incredible wisdom with their speech. But He can use them to teach you about your relationship with Him and how the Christian life is lived out.
Speaking to the wives; how do you view sex? Is it a chore? A burden? Do you enjoy sex? Do you look forward to having sex with your husband? Do you think it's only for him and not for you? Have your thoughts changed about sex since you were first married?
Question: Dr. Dobson, I have a friend who guards her kids as if they were in mortal danger. I feel like I should let my daughters spread their wings a little, even though they're only nine and eleven years of age. Who do you think is right?
