In the Name of God: Stop Mainstreaming Political Violence

Once again, America has been forced by events to ponder what beast is prowling the land. We just witnessed the third assassination attempt on President Trump. An attempted assassination of a president is an attack on America itself. The alleged wannabe killer, Caltech graduate Cole Tomas Allen, according to his own writings, intended to kill the president as well as Cabinet members. He thought that, by doing so, he was saving the country from tyranny and would become a national hero.

Similar fantasies occupied the minds of Thomas Matthew Crooks in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024, and of Ryan Wesley Routh, hiding in the bushes at the Mar-a-Lago golf course on September 15, 2024.

No previous president has been the target of three such attempts on his life. If the trend continues, and sanity does not return to our national discourse, it is not unreasonable to expect a few more killers, driven by bloodlust and hate, to take another shot.

Killing or attempting to kill a president is a bloody act of terror that cheers our enemies while it demoralizes our citizens and undermines our liberties.

A popular narrative is that these assassination attempts can be explained by Trump Derangement Syndrome. There is no doubt that many leftists are “triggered” by the president. The argument is that once President Trump is gone, things will get back to “normal.” I do not believe the evidence supports such a conclusion. America is deeply divided on multiple important issues, including many that Christians care deeply about.

In recent years, public policy on issues, including the sanctity of life, religious liberty, and parental rights, has shifted in our direction. The political, cultural, and secular Left is not happy that its project of remaking America into a secular socialist nation has been delayed, perhaps even stopped.

Dozens of new radical leftist groups have emerged. ANTIFA-like organizations have engaged in street violence. We are in the midst of a wave of political violence that predominantly comes from the Left. Think about the events in recent years.

Charlie Kirk was a leader of the Christian revival on our university campuses and the leading advocate of nonviolent dialogue. He was brutally murdered by a young man deep into transgender and furry ideology. After his death, a shocking number of well-educated people—doctors, nurses, executives, cultural leaders—celebrated his killing. They mocked him and even his widow.

After the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, violent demonstrations by radical Muslim and far-left students broke out on virtually every major US university. Attacks on Jewish institutions, including synagogues, swept the United States and Europe. Antisemitic violence exploded. In Colorado Springs, an antisemite attacked peaceful Jews with a makeshift flamethrower, killing one person and injuring a dozen others. In Washington, D.C., two young Israeli Embassy employees were brutally shot in the back outside the Capital Jewish Museum.

Leftist violence is not new. In 2020, after the death of George Floyd in a confrontation with police in Minneapolis, leftist riots broke out in dozens of US cities. Property destruction exceeded $1 billion in damage and at least nineteen people were killed. A defund-the-police movement swept the country. Many cities under left-wing mayors fired hundreds of police officers. Crime and lawlessness grew.

The abortion issue has also resulted in violence. When the Supreme Court ended the fiction that there is a constitutional right to abortion, death threats against conservative justices exploded. A wannabe assassin traveled from California to the Washington, D.C., suburbs with the intention of murdering Justice Kavanaugh. Crisis pregnancy centers and pro-life churches were vandalized. The Biden Justice Department did virtually nothing to bring the perpetrators to justice.

At the beginning of President Trump’s second term, Elon Musk was assigned the task of rooting out waste and fraud in the federal bureaucracy. The Left exploded with rage. Democrat members of Congress employed over-the-top rhetoric, demonizing Musk. Tesla owners’ cars were vandalized. Tesla dealerships were set on fire. Musk and his team of volunteers had to have twenty-four-hour-a-day protection.

As support for socialism has grown dramatically on the Left, violent attacks on business leaders have spread. Brian Thompson, CEO of United Healthcare, was shot in the back by Luigi Mangione. Mangione has become a folk hero on the Left, with adoring crowds of young women showing up outside of court to cheer him on. Recently, the home of Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, was firebombed by a twenty-year-old radical.

In all of these cases, there was a narrative in the media and among left-wing elected officials to excuse or justify the violence.

A rising social media force on the Left is Hasan Piker, who has justified the murder of business executives and called for more violence against business leaders. He has 4.5 million followers and is the hottest ticket in town for socialist Democrats who want to be interviewed on his podcast.

Late-night comedy hasn’t been funny for many years now. Like so much of the culture, it is dominated by left-wing elitist snobs who aim their most outrageous “jokes” at conservatives. It finally proved to be too much for First Lady Melania Trump.

Just two days before the latest attempt to make her a widow, ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel “joked” that Melania Trump has “a glow like an expectant widow.”1 The first lady blasted Kimmel as a “coward,” calling his rhetoric “hateful,” “violent,” and “corrosive.”2 Mrs. Trump called on ABC to take responsibility for Kimmel’s “atrocious behavior.”3

Large portions of the American Left are an echo chamber justifying violence. That is not true among conservatives.

The most effective form of indoctrination is repetition. Every hour of every day, every conservative Christian idea is being “demonized.”

Leftists constantly say, “Conservatives are fascists, bigots, and haters.” They claim, “Christian nationalists are threatening democracy.” Some say that our belief that liberty comes from God, not government, is “anti-democratic.” That would come as quite a surprise to our Founding Fathers, who built America on that very truth!

The Left’s labeling of normal views on the sanctity of life, the rights of parents, religious liberty, secure borders, and love of country as “fascism” and “hatred” must stop. We urge all responsible political leaders to join us in condemning such rhetoric.

We ask all Americans to join us in prayer for the safety of the president and first lady and all other elected public servants.
