Many years ago, God laid on my heart that I should defend our faith in the halls of Congress and the White House. This is how I met Dr. James Dobson and worked for President Ronald Reagan. I have been involved in “fighting the good fight” for a long time. This year is special. I do not recall another midterm election where the differences between the candidates and the parties were as stark as they are today. Yet many voters, including Christians, seem either uninterested or confused about what is at stake just a few days from now. Let’s look at some of the issues.
ABORTION.
Is there one voter in America who does not realize at this point that the Democrat Party is not simply “pro-choice,” but pro-abortion? Virtually every Democrat candidate running for the House, the Senate, or governor fully embraces abortion-on-demand for any and all reasons in all three trimesters.
In addition, Democrat governors and state legislators have put pro-abortion referenda on the ballot in Virginia, Idaho, and Nevada.1 These ballot measures enshrine abortion-on-demand in the constitutions of those states. These extreme measures would even allow minor girls to get abortions without their parents’ knowledge or permission. These proposals are intentionally written in obscure language to confuse voters.
Dr. Dobson and I always wanted the Republican Party to be more boldly pro-life. But there is no doubt that it is a pro-life party and that President Trump is a pro-life president. He has appointed three pro-life justices to the Supreme Court. It was Donald Trump’s justices who reversed Roe v. Wade and ended the fiction that a “right” to destroy a precious child in the womb, made in the image of God, is in our Constitution.
GENDER IDEOLOGY.
It is hard to believe we are even debating whether a boy can become a girl and a girl can become a boy. Can children be “trapped in the wrong body”? Should they be allowed to sterilize themselves with powerful chemicals? Should doctors be permitted to mutilate children’s bodies using radical surgeries in the vain attempt to turn them into something they are not and never will be? Liberal Democrat candidates regularly fall on their swords on this issue.2
The Trump administration and the Republican Congress have done everything possible to protect our children from demonic trans ideology.3 Virtually every Republican candidate wants to keep men out of women’s sports. They want to keep boys out of your daughter’s school bathroom and locker room. They want to protect children from experimental medical procedures that are irreversible and cause a lifetime of pain and suffering. These conservative candidates want to stop forcing this insanity on our kids.
ISRAEL.
We don’t have to support every Israeli government 100 percent. But the US-Israel alliance that began under President Harry Truman in 1948 is the strongest alliance we have with any nation. This partnership makes sense because Israel and the United States share the same values.
But for Christians, our alliance with Israel also makes theological sense because our Bible tells us that God gave the Jewish people the land they are living in and that we should bless them. Israel and the United States are the twin pillars of Judeo-Christian civilization, and Israel is the tip of the spear in the war against radical Islam. Dr. Dobson loved and supported the nation of Israel and fought against the sin of antisemitism.
Multiple Democrat candidates are running who hate Israel, tolerate antisemitism, and make common cause with radical Islam. The worst example is Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed, the Democrat Senate candidate in Michigan. Polling shows the race is close, but El-Sayed has a narrow lead.
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY.
President Trump’s judicial appointees are strong defenders of religious liberty. His Supreme Court justices have given us several major wins in religious liberty cases.4 President Trump established special commissions to protect and promote religious liberty. Every Republican candidate strongly supports religious freedom.5
Marxist and Islamist candidates want to expand the size of the Supreme Court and pack it with far-left appointees.6 They will turn those recent religious liberty victories into defeats. They define religious liberty as being only your right to walk into a church and worship on Sundays. They refuse to accept the idea that Christians can bring their faith into politics, that we can be heard at school board meetings, and that we have a right to run our businesses and lead our families based on our faith. Liberal/Democrat-dominated states are taking children away from Christian parents if those parents refuse to affirm a child’s gender delusions.7
SOCIALISM.
Free enterprise made the United States of America the most prosperous nation on earth. Because of that prosperity, Americans enjoy the highest standard of living in the world and are the most generous people on earth. If socialism worked so well, the Soviet Union would still exist, and Cuba would be a “worker’s paradise.” Instead, toilet paper is a luxury in Havana.8
If we turn health care, housing, and child care over to government bureaucrats, our quality of life will plummet, and our debt will explode.
IMMIGRATION.
During the Biden administration, our borders were wide open. Millions of people, including gang members, drug dealers, criminals, and terrorists, poured across the southern border every year for four long years. American workers paid the price in depressed wages, higher rents, overcrowded schools, and higher crime. Conservatives in Congress secured the border. Wages are rising.9 Rents are falling.10 The crime rate is down dramatically, as are drug-related deaths.11
Immigration is an extremely important issue for another reason. Without setting certain standards and seriously vetting immigrants, we have literally been importing hate into our country. Many immigrants from Islamic countries despise Judeo-Christian values. They hate Jews and Christians.
We saw the result of years of stupid immigration policies in the days after the October 7, 2023, Hamas massacre in Israel. Our college campuses and the streets of our major cities erupted in spasms of hatred against Jews and Israel, as well as the United States.
We have also seen the negative effects of open borders in the rampant fraud among certain immigrant communities in Maine, Minnesota, Ohio, and Washington state. The claim that “diversity is our strength” doesn’t hold up. It can be a strength, but only if everyone agrees on shared values. If new immigrants don’t share our values and refuse to assimilate, “diversity” becomes dangerous. We can see this in Europe now, as riots sweep across the continent and rioters wave the flags of foreign nations.12
This midterm election is unlike any other in modern American history because Marxist and Islamist candidates reject America’s traditions. They want to “fundamentally transform” America into a socialist swamp. But if Christian citizens stay home and neglect their civic duty to vote, America will be transformed into something we all deeply regret.
