A Setback For Death By Mail

Between 2011 and 2020, U.S. chemical abortions doubled. This trend has accelerated since the Supreme Court overturned abortion on demand. What a sad commentary on the “culture of death” in our country. Not only do the pills kill unborn children, they also present significant risks to the women who ingest them.

Under the Biden administration, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has made it easier to obtain multiple abortion drugs by mail. The Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled last week that the FDA had not done the necessary research to determine the “safety” of the pills, particularly if they haven’t been prescribed nor received in person from a physician. The ruling doesn’t settle all the issues and the decision is likely to be reviewed eventually by the Supreme Court.

Alliance Defending Freedom, who filed a lawsuit against the FDA, praised the ruling. Senior Counsel Erin Hawley said, “The FDA will finally be made to account for the damage it has caused to the health of countless women and girls and the rule of law by unlawfully removing every meaningful safeguard from the chemical abortion drug regimen.” (Christian Post, August 19, 2023)

Not surprisingly, NARAL Pro-Choice America condemned the ruling. They started an online petition “to protect reproductive freedom for everybody.”

NARAL’s president, Mini Timmaraju, said, “As this baseless lawsuit makes its way to an extremist Supreme Court, we will continue to fight with our allies to protect and expand access to medication abortion for all.” The NARAL website asserted, “we don’t back down.”

Neither do those of us who believe all our children are valuable and should be welcomed into the world and protected by the law. See you in court, NARAL!  JDFI proudly signed onto an amicus brief in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, and we look forward to making the case for life before the U.S. Supreme Court.
