The gift that keeps on giving

You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
Psalm 16:11

There was a Dennis the Menace comic strip years ago that showed Dennis rushing into the room holding a big box. His mom turns around and her mouth drops open as Dennis says, “Mom, we’d better tell Santa Claus to forget about the train that I asked for. I just found one exactly like I want on the top shelf of Dad’s closet.”

Everyone loves to receive gifts at Christmas time–especially kids. You may remember how as a child, those weeks before Christmas were so difficult, creeping by the tree wondering what was in those boxes. And you would hope it was exactly what you’d asked for.

And then the day came when you opened you presents, and there was this overwhelming joy you experience as you spent the day playing with your new toys for the first time. Yet as the days went by, the newness wore off. Those toys you couldn’t live without weeks ago now sat in the corner collecting dust.

But Jesus is the gift that never grows old. While some may be content to dabble in religion for a while and then put it back on the shelf, having a living relationship with Christ renews and refreshes us every day.

Don’t just dabble in Jesus this season and then let Him collect dust in your life when the holidays are over. Get to know Him better this Christmas by spending time in His Word. Jesus is the gift that keeps on giving!

Prayer Challenge:

Ask Jesus to light a fire in your heart for Him that burns brightly even after Christmas is over.

Questions for Thought:

Why do you think many people experience a “let down” after the Christmas season ends?

What are some steps you can take to step into the coming year spiritually strong in Christ?
