The Olympic Ceremony — A Teachable Moment for Us and Our Kids

Many Christians are appalled by what they saw during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics. The performances were disrespectful to our Savior and served as a stark reminder of humanity's sinful nature, void of the redeeming grace of Jesus Christ.

Understandably, parents are upset by the wickedness displayed to those in attendance and those who watched the telecast, especially their children. What is now important is how to respond.

If your children watched the event with you or heard about it from their friends, take this opportunity to emphasize the gospel and the reality of humankind—we are all sinners. By default, we each fall short of God's goodness and glory (Romans 3:23).

The further humanity steps away from God, the more our sinfulness will abound.

Here are a few points to discuss with your children:

• While decency and respect were once prevailing values of modern society, we now see these virtues fading. Talk about the reasons for this shift in mindset.
• Ask your children what their friends are saying about the Olympic opening ceremony. Have a conversation about why there might be varying opinions.
• Reinforce the state of humanity's depravity and our need for Jesus, the one and only Savior. Here are a few relevant Scripture verses to read and discuss: Romans 3:23-24, Ephesians 2:1-3, and Psalm 14:2-3.
• Share your salvation testimony with your children and the need to "acknowledge God" in every area of life (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Let's use for good what the world intends for evil and reiterate to our children and each other the ever-present need for our Lord and Savior—in all we say and do (Colossians 3:17).

“There is one problem before humanity: sin. There is one hope for humanity: Christ.”
