Faithful, Fearless, and Unyielding: Dr. James Dobson’s Stand for Life

I had the honor of knowing Dr. James Dobson. He was a dear friend, and I had the privilege of speaking on his broadcast several times and at his annual Gathering conferences. The time I spent with him has had a tremendous impact on my life. At his urging, I founded ProLifeDoc.org, and during one of our interviews, we coined the motto for my ministry: “A Patient Is a Person, No Matter How Small." He poured into me and forever changed my life!

Staying Close Across the Miles

Living miles apart can make meaningful connection more difficult, but distance doesn’t have to determine how close you are. Roger Marsh offers encouragement for grandparents who want to remain an important part of their grandchildren’s lives, even from far away. Keeping Grandparents Close https://cdn.bfldr.com/FK28HSHN/at/ksbgn4trb53z7shx35pk2r/keeping-grandparents-close-vertical.mp4 Nurturing Grandchildren Through Prayer A lot of you told us the same thing in different words: We don’t live close enough, and we’re missing important moments. Boone and Peggy Powell built their grandparenting around that exact problem. Their grandchildren were not next door. So they did two things. First, they prayed by name, daily, for each one. Not generally. Specifically, for the thing that child was actually facing that week. The Powells’ argument to Dr. Dobson was that you can be a genuinely active participant in a grandchild’s relationship with God from any distance at all—and that most grandparents greatly underestimate this because they can’t see it working. Second, they built a tradition and defended it. They ran what they called Cousin Camps, a fixed window every year when the grandchildren came to them, without their parents, and something happened that could not happen on a two-hour holiday visit. The Powells’ second approach offers an important ...

Passing on Your Values in a Changing Culture

The culture may be changing, but the influence of a faithful grandparent still matters. Roger Marsh offers encouragement for grandparents who want to pass on their values and help the next generation build a strong foundation of faith. Where Are Grandparents Today? https://cdn.bfldr.com/FK28HSHN/at/tm86kstv7hxmhmksktpcxtc/where-are-grandparents-today-vertical.mp4 A Higher Calling You are watching your grandchildren grow up inside a set of assumptions you did not choose and would not have chosen. And you have very little formal authority to do anything about it. Dr. Jay Kesler gave an answer on the Family Talk broadcast that reframes the whole problem. He said a grandparent’s home should function as a welcome retreat. Not a second courtroom. Not a place where the child gets the lecture they already got at home from the other side. A stable place where a corrupt culture stops at the door and a grandchild can bring a question they are not comfortable asking anyone else. Kesler’s point was blunt: if one of your grandchildren gets into real trouble, you may be the first phone call. Not because you were the loudest voice on values. Because you were the safest one. That is a different job than the one most worried grandparents assign ...

Grandparenting Series: Leave a Legacy of Faith

Roger video intro https://cdn.bfldr.com/FK28HSHN/at/89jggjp466kcx6pnxrwkpt2/09142021GRANDPARENTSANDTHEIRVITALROLE_BROADCASTTRAILER.mp4 Video title/caption A Grandmother’s Lasting Influence Question: I am a grandmother who is blessed to have fourteen grandchildren. I often take care of them and love just having them over. However, I would like to do more for them than just babysit. What can I do to really make an impact on their lives? Answer: Above all else, I would hope you would help lead your grandchildren to Jesus Christ. You are in a wonderful position to do that. My grandmother had a profound impact on my spiritual development—even greater in my early years than my father, who was a minister. She talked about the Lord every day and made Him seem like a very dear friend who lived in our house. I will never forget the conversations we had about heaven and how wonderful it would be to live there throughout eternity. That little lady is on the other side today, waiting for the rest of her family to join her in that beautiful city. You can have that kind of impact on your family, too. Grandparents have been given powerful influence on their grandchildren if they will take the time to invest in their ...
