The parents of five children, Jonathan and Kanika share that through their trials, they learned to hold on to their faith and depend fully on the Lord. Jesus says, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Jonathan notes that you know you’ve given your burden to God when you’re no longer trying to manipulate the outcome.

Surviving Suicide Loss

According to Rita Schulte (SHOOL-tee), her high school sweetheart, Mike, was “superman.” Not only was he an accomplished dentist, but a loving husband and father who was involved in several ministries and led Bible studies. But, after developing and battling paranoia and insomnia, Mike became clinically depressed and took his own life. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Rita shares that in the weeks and months after her husband’s death, it felt like a bomb went off in her life. She was non-functional and drowning in guilt. As Rita began the healing process, she learned the key was not to focus on what happened to her, but to examine what the Lord was doing in and through her.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a spiritual wound. That’s the contention of Chad Robichaux (Row-ba-show), a retired U.S. Marine who served eight tours of duty in Afghanistan. Today, he counsels people with PTSD to recognize that medication should be a pitstop on the road to recovery, not the destination. After eight tours of duty in Afghanistan, Chad Robichaux (Row-ba-show) had seen it all. From the brutality of the Taliban to witnessing the deaths of 15 fellow soldiers, he began to suffer from debilitating panic attacks. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Chad says, “Imagine you’re drowning in a swimming pool and handcuffed to the bottom. How desperate would you feel to get one breath of air?” That was his level of panic 24/7. When he returned to America, his extreme PTSD led to a suicide attempt in his bedroom closet. Thankfully, Chad trusted Christ as his Savior and today, he serves active duty, military veteran and first responder communities with faith based trauma and resiliency programs.

When Muslim terrorists crashed two planes into the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11, 2001, close to 3,000 people lost their lives. As a firefighter working in the debris of the attack, Tom Bowen used his fire hose as a lifeline to navigate through the rubble and wreckage. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Bowen explains that 2,000-degree fires continued to burn underground for months afterwards. As he retrieved and returned the remains of the dead to their families, he inhaled toxic fumes, which led to the development of brain lesions and the need for a large portion of his right lung to be removed. As Tom struggled to put his life back together, he discovered how Jesus is the ultimate lifeline for every believer.
